At the end of a long day, discovering you have no hot water for your relaxing shower is the last thing you want. Before getting in touch with our engineers, there are a few simple things that you can check for yourself to hopefully restore hot water to your taps and showers.
Check Your Boiler
When your water is only running cold, your boiler is the usual culprit. Luckily, the cause is often a straightforward problem with an easy fix! The first step is to check your boiler settings and controls, especially hot water thermostats, clocks, and timers. It is also worth keeping in mind that some boilers may reset to factory settings after a full power cut or being turned off at the mains, so you may need to adjust accordingly.
You may see a fault or error code on your boiler’s display if there is an issue. You can use your boiler’s manual or get in touch with us to determine what this code means and what action you need to take.
If you have a combi boiler, a lack of hot water may be caused by low pressure. The needle on your boiler’s pressure gauge usually sits between 1 and 1.5 but refer to your user manual for the correct settings for your specific system. If you feel comfortable, you can re-pressurise your heating system by very gradually allowing water into the boiler, however you should not try this unless you are confident on how to do this safely.
If you notice that the pressure levels in your boiler have dropped significantly, you should check for water leaks as soon as possible. Look for signs of damp, mould or patches on the ceiling and contact us urgently to repair your pipework before it can cause serious damage.
Faulty Diverter Valve
Sometimes, your central heating can be working perfectly despite not getting any hot water from your taps. This could be caused by a faulty diverter valve, which is a special part of your central heating system that determines whether the hot water goes to your radiators or your taps.
Diverter valves can degrade over time or can get stuck in one position, this is a common problem that we are able to fix quickly and easily. Just get in touch and one of our expert team of local engineers will be able to help you.
By booking in for an annual boiler service, we can catch small issues such as old diverter valves before they become big problems. You can also spread the cost of your annual boiler service throughout the year by signing up to our Service Plan.
Airlocks in your Pipes
Is your hot water tap sputtering or struggling to give any water at all? This could indicate the build-up of air in your pipes, known as an airlock, that can cause blockages in your water system. One of our engineers can perform a drain of the system to clear out any trapped air and get your pipes flowing properly again.
If at any point you are uncertain of what action to take, just give us a call and we can provide expert advice or get a highly experienced, GasSafe registered local engineer over to your home to help resolve the issue. You should never take any action to attempt to fix your boiler or central heating system unless you are completely confident in what you are doing.
