SGS Service Manager, Jon Wallace, took it upon himself to be involved in a very special charity project: the full refurbishment of a Romanian orphanage.
It all began when Jon’s 10-year-old son Jack was given the opportunity to visit Romania on a school trip during Easter 2017. Jack visited a number of orphanages where he made some valuable, life-long friendships. On his return, he asked whether he and his family would host a Romanian orphan during the summer, along with several other children’s families from the school. Seeing Jack so enthusiastic, his family welcomed a young man, Florin, into their home for four weeks.
On the first night, Florin was so overwhelmed that Jack had given up his bed and bedroom for the duration of his stay, that Jon decided to visit Florin’s orphanage in September. What he saw both shocked and inspired him – he decided to make a difference and help to improve living conditions for the children living in the orphanage.
In June 2018, both Jon Wallace and Jon Graylen, also working for SGS as an Engineer, took part in a sponsored bike ride, riding 160 miles in just 2 days. They both raised a total of £1200 which helped towards purchasing all the materials required to refurbish the orphanage.
Jon Wallace then headed out to Romania in the following August, along with several volunteers, to gut the orphanage and begin carrying out a full refurb of the children’s bedrooms, living spaces and bathrooms. The project included elements of electrical wiring, plumbing and sanitaryware, as well as carpentry and flooring. All skills that he experiences and manages every day.
The whole project was completed in 10 days, which included stripping the tiled flooring and worn laminate flooring and replacing it with new laminate flooring. The team also painted, fitted bedroom furniture and replaced all sanitary ware – kindly donated by AQUATEC, Salisbury.
“This project provided the children with a happy, comfortable, clean and warm home – something every child deserves.” – Jon Wallace
Jon proactively used his skills and project management skills to better the lives of real communities. Closer to home though, we are committed to help make a difference in Salisbury and in the local area through our skills, time or technical resources. We’re making a difference through our community initiative, SGS Stars.
If you know of someone, a group or NFP organisation that you think could benefit from some of our team donating their time to help out, please let us know.
