Celebrating a Year of Solar Powered Energy Savings!

Overiew

It’s been just over a year since we installed a Solar PV and battery system at Idmiston Parish Memorial Hall as part of their renovation scheme. Twelve months on, here’s a review to show the real impact this renewable energy system has had on the Hall.

What we installed:

  • 4.9kW array of Trina 415W all-black panels, set up on a Van Der Valk ballast system
  • 3.6kW Huawei hybrid inverter
  • 1 x Huawei BMS (battery management system)
  • 10kW Huawei Battery (10 year warranty)
  • 5 x Mitsubishi Wall Mounted Air conditioning units with Built In WIFI 7.1kW R32 Diamond Inverter. 1ph White

Energy Production and Consumption

Since it’s installation, the system has generated an impressive 3.99MWh of electricity. This energy is captured from the sun’s rays during daylight hours and then used by the Hall to power its lighting, heating, and other electrical needs. Of the total energy produced, the Hall has consumed 2.96MWh, meaning that almost all of the generated energy is being utilized for the Hall’s daily operations, reducing the need for energy purchased from the grid.

The system has also exported 1.03MWh of electricity back to the grid. This export provides a valuable contribution to the national grid, helping to meet the overall energy demands of the region while promoting sustainable energy practices.

Financial and Environmental Benefits

Since installing the Solar PV system they’ve made energy savings of over £1,100. This amount reflects a reduced reliance on conventional grid electricity, which has been particularly important in an era of rising energy prices. The combination of generation and storage means the Hall can use its own clean energy instead of purchasing from the grid, further contributing to their cost-efficiency.

The system has also met expectations with a considerable environmental impact too. The 3.99MWh generated by the system has resulted in a reduction of 1.91 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. To put that into perspective, this is the equivalent of planting three trees, which absorb CO2 over their lifetime, helping to offset the Hall’s carbon footprint. Additionally, this reduction in emissions is comparable to saving 1.61 tons of coal, further illustrating the role that renewable energy can play in mitigating climate change.

Energy Storage and Future Potential

The inclusion of a 10kW battery storage system ensures that any surplus energy generated during the day is not wasted. The energy can be stored and used during times when the sun isn’t shining, such as during the evening or on cloudy days. This increases the Hall’s self-sufficiency and decreases reliance on the grid during peak times, further enhancing both its cost savings and environmental impact.

Looking ahead, as the system continues to operate, it’s expected that the Hall will continue to benefit both financially and environmentally. With the solar PV system showing great efficiency and reliability, the Hall is now well-positioned to reduce its energy costs even further, and to contribute to a greener, more sustainable community.

System highlights so far:

  • Generated 3.99Mwh of electricity
  • Savings of over £1,100 in energy bills
  • Exported 1.03 Mwh of electricity back to the grid
  • Reduction of 1.91 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions

Conclusion

In its first year of operation, the solar PV system at Idmiston Parish Memorial Hall has proven to be a valuable investment. From significant cost savings and reduced carbon emissions to the positive environmental impact, this project exemplifies the potential of solar power for community buildings. As the system continues to generate energy, it sets a great example for other communities looking to embrace renewable energy solutions for a more sustainable future.
